The imperfective semantics of durative gemination in Northern Paiute
نویسنده
چکیده
Like other Numic languages (Uto-Aztecan), Northern Paiute has a morphological process of durative gemination, which conveys some type of aspect. I describe the semantics of durative gemination in Northern Paiute, locating it within an emerging typology of imperfective aspect from the formal semantics literature. Like the imperfective aspect in other languages, durative gemination has an event-in-progress interpretation, in addition to a number of other interpretations. Somewhat unexpectedly, one of these does not depict the internal structure of an event, but rather the event as a whole. I identify parallels between this completed interpretation for durative gemination in Northern Paiute and similar interpretations for the imperfective aspect in better-studied languages. There is a morphological process in the Numic branch of Uto-Aztecan languages that is traditionally called “durative gemination.” It applies to verbs and is most commonly realized as fortition (or gemination) of the final syllable’s onset. In Northern Paiute (ISO code: pao), for instance, the verb hibi ‘drink’, whose basic form is illustrated in (1a–b), undergoes durative gemination to become hipi, as in (1c).1 ∗I am greatly indebted to Grace Dick, Edith McCann, and Madeline Stevens for continuing to teach me about their language over the years. In addition, I thank Pranav Anand, Isabelle Charnavel, and Sergei Tatevosov for their helpful discussion on a number of issues. I have also learned a lot from audience members at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Indigenous Languages of the Americas in Portland and Semantics of Under-Represented Languages in the Americas 8 at the University of British Columbia, as well as at Boston University and the University of California (Berkeley and Santa Cruz). 1Transcriptions use IPA except y stands for [j], lenis b, d, and g are [b∼ B], [R], and [g∼ G] respectively, and double letters represent geminate consonants and long vowels. I use the following abbreviations: ACC = accusative, ADV = adverbial, COM = comitative, CONJ = conjunctive subject, CONT = continuous aspect, DEM = demonstrative, DIM = diminutive, DL = dual, DUR = durative gemination, EMPH = emphatic particle, EXCL = exclusive, F = feminine, GEN = genitive, HAB = habitual aspect, IMPF = imperfective aspect, INCEP = inceptive, INSTR = instrumental, INT = intensive, IP = instrumental prefix, LOC = postposition, NEG = negation, NMZ = nominalizer, NOM = nominative, PASS = passive, PAST = past tense, PERF = perfect aspect, PFV = perfective, PL = plural, PROG = progressive aspect, PROSP = prospective aspect, PRS = present tense, PTC = discourse particle, QUOT = quotative, REFL = possessive reflexive anaphor, SEQ = sequential suffix, SG = singular, SIM = simultaneous suffix, SUBJ = indicative subject.

Alignment and weight in the Tigrinya verb stem
In the Type A Imperfective paradigm of Tigrinya (Ethio-Semitic), unsuffixed verbs have a geminate medial consonant (yÁ-s√bbÁr), while verbs with a subject or object suffix do not have gemination (yÁ-s√br-u). This alternation has been analyzed from various points of view. A fundamental question is whether the more basic stem-form has gemination (Berhane 1991, Rose 1993) or not (Harris 1987, Dena...
متن کاملMora Augmentation in the Alabama Imperfective: an Optimality Theoretic Perspective
In the Alabama language an imperfective aspect can be formed by geminating the onset consonant or lengthening the vowel of the penultimate syllable of a word. The imperfective morpheme consists of a single mora (with a linked high tone), and I demonstrate that whether gemination or lengthening takes place follows directly from a ranking of relevant constraints. The current optimality analysis d...
متن کاملLexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs
The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...
متن کاملUNTIL, Aspect, and Negation: A Novel Argument for Two Untils
1. Outline of the argument The puzzle of English until is well-known. Karttunen 1974 argues that until is ambiguous between a durative and a punctual negative polarity (NPI) meaning. Mittwoch 1977 claims that there is no ambiguity and that the two meanings are due to scope differences: NPI-until is in fact until above negation. Mittwoch's account relies crucially on the assumption that negation...
متن کاملThe temporal interpretation of clause chaining in Northern Paiute
ing over the relative tense inside the subordinate (marked) clause produces a property of times that can combine with the main (unmarked) clause through set intersection (or predicate modification; Heim & Kratzer 1998:65), as long as it is adjoined low enough to combine with another property of times. This is much like the semantic composition of a temporal adjunct clause (see, for instance, vo...
